Coming February 14 is the movie that will lead its watchers into a world of fantasy and magic and bring out the child in anyone.
The newest film in question, ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles,’ is based on the popluar five book series by authors Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi of the same name.
The main characters, Jared and Simon Grace, who are both played by Freddie Highmore (‘Willy Wonka’ and ‘August Rush’), with their mother Helen Grace, played by Mary-Louise Parker, and sister Mallory Grace, played by Sarah Bolger, move into the run-down Spiderwick Estate, home of their late great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick.
Soon after, many unexpected things begin to happen and everyone starts blaming Jared for the strange occurrences.
One of the main scenes takes place when Jared finds a field guide to a fantastical world hidden in reality written by none other than Arthur Spiderwick himself.
In the story line, Jared finds himself wrapped up in a world of whimsy and soon befriends a boggart, Thimbletack.
Thimbletack has been ordered to protect the field guide of this hidden world, but Jared has a way of making trouble, making enemies with the goblins and their ogre leader Mulgrath.
Mulgrath has plans of his own and wants to use the field guide to learn the secrets of this fantastical world to take complete control of it. Jared, Simon, and Mallory go on an epic magical adventure to protect the field guide and save the unseen world.
The movie has a mixture of some of the greatest fantasy movies of the time while pulling in different parts from each. It has a little ‘Lord of the Rings’ what with the goblins and a troll, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ with its extravagant landscapes and a majestic griffin, and ‘Harry Potter’ with the magical modern feel to it.
It is also similar to the movie version of the popular book series ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events,’ which packed the first three books into one film.
However, this movie didn’t hesitate to use portions of all five books.
If viewers are coming expecting a ‘Harry Potter’ type film, they will be disappointed but if they are expecting a fun little adventure with Freddie Highmore in it, I would defiantly recommend they go to this movie.
