Prom is one of the most anticipated events in high school, especially for girls.

They imagine what they would do with their hair, how their friends would react to their date, and every detail about the dress they would wear.

For some, this is all it would be.

Fortunately there is help for girls who are financially unable to wear the dress of their dreams.

Rebecca Kirtman started a program during her freshman year at Nova Senior High School. It provided dresses for girls wanting to attend their prom or homecoming dances but did not have the resources to purchase the correct attire.

Through the school year she worked a countless number of hours and she managed to collect over 250 prom dresses.

Sadly, Rebecca passed away in August 2003 in a car accident, prior to entering her junior year, but her dream would not be forgotten.

Her friends and family took up her project and it has flourished into what is now called Becca’s Closet which serves Miami Dade, Monroe, and Broward counties.

Becca’s Closet opened on April 9th 2004 at the Festival Flea Market located in Pompano, and they now have over 2,500 dresses available.

Following Becca’s dream, her organization will now begin collecting and distributing men’s formal wear.

It has also established a college scholarship fund that will run on donations and several fundraisers.

To get a dress, students should contact Becca’s Closet at 954-424-9999 for an appointment and all that is needed is a valid high school ID to enter.

According to Jay Kirtman, a representative of Becca’s Closet, dresses are free to girls in need.

Any student that would like to donate a dress should visit any Bank United or Beverly’s Jewelers location.

Dresses should be in good condition and appropriate for teenage girls (nothing a grandmother would wear).

No donation is too small and as Rebecca used to say to her friends and family, “Little things can make a big difference.”
