Joseph Timpanaro playing with his band Nothing But Robots - Luis Parades
Advertising
History
teacher Joe Timpanaro, who is also a lead singer and bassist, took the
stage with his band Nothing But Robots Saturday, January 28, at the
entertainment venue Chill in Montclair for the Break Contest. The band’s
first all-ages show was also a contest to win the opportunity to play
at the Bamboozle Festival, a three-day music festival held in May in
Asbury Park, N.J.
Timpanaro
said that he wasn’t nervous for the show because he has been playing in
the band for years. He said he was only nervous about selling enough
tickets for the show.
Timpanaro
said he signed up for this show for two reasons: “It was an all-ages
show and the winner could play at the Bamboozle Festival.”
The
show made him want to play at more underage shows, Timpanaro said,
because the band was given more attention, compared to the bars where
the band normally plays. He said that people at the bars are often
preoccupied with having conversations and drinking.
“This show, all eyes were on us. Everyone was paying attention and digging it,” Timpanaro said.
Senior
and Student Voice editor-in-chief Sabrina Cartagena said the show was
“really cool,” and that Nothing But Robots did very well. She said she
was excited to see them because she has always wanted to see Timpanaro
perform since she first heard he was in a band.
“When he was performing, I didn’t see him as my teacher; he was just a rock star,” Cartagena said.
Senior
John Romero said that Timpanaro’s band was pretty good and, compared to
the other bands in the contest, they have a good chance of making it to
the next round.
“They sounded like they have been playing for a long time,” Romero said. “The other bands sucked.”
Senior
Luis Parades said that the band was great and that it was interesting
because he got to experience a new environment with his teacher. He said
it felt good to see his teacher perform because he got to see
Timpanaro’s other passion aside from teaching, and see his love for
music.
“He really put his heart into it. He did his thing,” he said.
Parades and Cartagena both said that they hope that Nothing But Robots goes on to the next round.
“I
hope they win, because who wants to listen to a bunch of yelling, when
you could listen to Tip’s music and understand the words,” Parades said.
Timpanaro
said that the band scored 7 out of 10 for performance and 2 out of 10
for social media promotion, but he still thinks that they still have a
chance of making it to the next round.
However,
even if Nothing But Robots makes it to the next round, Timpanaro said
that they will not be participating because they would have to sell
tickets for the contest , which is “tedious” and they do not make any
profit out of it.
Nothing
But Robots is going to have a big performance in March, according to
Timpanaro; unfortunately, students will most likely not be able to go
because of the age requirement
