Not all students have enough money to go to college. Some may have even heard their parents say that they may not be able to go at all because of money problems. Well for those students Madison has filled a page on their website specifically for financial aid and scholarships. All these scholarships and grants, how do you know which one is for you. Well you take a deep breath and read each one. Sometimes you can tell just by reading the title, for example technical scholarship is obviously for people going into a technical field. Others you need a little reading into to find out. All in all, don’t be afraid of them though, yeah they ask you to do an essay that a teacher did not specifically force you to do but they’re there to help. So let them and take the time to help yourself to some free college money. Don’t let money be an obstacle to your dreams. Besides finding the money for college there are other problems to leaving high school as well. The thought of college, what your future career will be, it’s tough to figure it all out at age 17 or 18.

So also on this page Madison has put a few websites specifically for helping you find the right college and major for you. Just a helpful hint for those worried about majors you don’t have to choose your major till your sophomore year in college. So you have time to think about it and explore what you’d like to do with your life. The average college student changes their major 7 times so don’t be afraid to change mind when you find something isn’t going right.

You can also visit colleges to see if they’re for you. Make sure that when looking for a college that you consider their faculty to student ratio. This means the number students per class. It can vary from 20 students in one class, like here in Madison, to 100 students in a class, like in Ohio State. Some people like a small class; you have more of a chance of the teacher noticing you and helping you with your needs. Others like big classes; they don’t want the teacher to notice them they just want to be another number. Other things to realize are if you want to live in the city; with lots of museums, theaters, and galleries. Or in the country; with mountains, trails, and camp sites for those outdoorsmen. Lastly do you want to go to a public college or a private one? Public colleges are cheaper and usually bigger, but private colleges are more prestigious and the small ones like to help you out more, Yale and Harvard not so much. Whatever college you go to just make sure it’s the right one for you, if it’s not then you can just transfer to another college and keep your credits. Even if you’re going from a community college to a private college they’ll usually keep your credits so you don’t have to retake any classes. Transferring colleges is not a bad thing; in fact most jobs like to see that you have been to more than one college. It shows that you are okay with different and various environments and that you still work just as well in them.
