At-a-glance

As school funding decreases, budget cuts affect FHS

Budget cuts in the Fairborn school district affect every part of FHS. Right down to the most vital parts- like the clinic.
"The aide they [the state of Ohio] give to the schools is reduced." Principal Bob Cotter says "We are spending less money in every department."
"Our budget is a lot slimmer than what it used to be" says our school nurse of the last three years, Mrs. Cheri Hill.
Every year, we face the possibility of cuts on the aide that we receive from the government. Since we are a public school, this is what we count on to keep our school safe and functioning. Cuts in our government aide threaten the jobs of many staff members that we know and love. For instance, Mrs. Cheri Hill.
"They cut staff down last year at the elementary." Says Hill
"That knocked them down to one full-time nurse at Fairborn primary. I lost my job at that point and then, she decided she didn’t want the job at the high school and I got to keep my job"
At this point, we are down to one full time nurse per school in our school district. As a result, there will be more work for Hill, who sees an average of 40 kids per day. When asked what will suffer due to the cutbacks, Hill responded "The quality of the care of the kids, because there’s not enough people to work."
Junior Dillon Hayes, who is a clinic aide, says,
"Sometimes it gets overwhelming when you’ve got seven or eight kids coming in saying their sick. You can’t pay attention to everybody."
However, many of our students are confident that hill will be able to handle it. From students who frequently use the clinic, to students who have hardly visited it throughout their high school careers. All that I spoke with agree that Hill is respected amongst students and staff and is a dedicated staff member.
"[Hill] is very dedicated to her work" says Hayes.
Junior Adanna Smith agrees, saying "Mrs. Hill is very nice and very educated about her work." And also goes on to say" The clinic is a very important part of our school."
Junior Larae Greene also agrees "We need the clinic because these lockers are really sharp." Says Greene with a bit of a chuckle.
"The clinic is something that is vital to our kids so that’s going to be one of the last things cut" said Cotter.
