Fashion seems to be synonymous with discomfort these days (Steve Madden heels, anyone?). But it doesn’t have to be.

This winter, polish up your look with a few trendy accessories that will keep you warm… Without that neon, puffy ski-jacket you’re hiding in the back of your closet. Whether it’s a breezy November walk from the bus, or last-minute holiday shopping trip in the snow, here are a few pieces you won’t be able to live without this season.

The Jacket

A mash-up of “sophisticated model” and “starving artist,” the classic button-up wool coat looks great in almost any dark, solid color. Throw on over skinny jeans, a plain tee, and slouchy boots, and you’re good to go. Big buttons are a must, but the length – ranging from crop jacket to almost trench-length – is negotiable. It’s such a flexible piece, so it’s worth the price. Pick one up at Old Navy in any of a variety of colors for around 90 dollars.

The Knee-Sock

They may not look warm, but slip a pair of these over your tights, and you’ll never go back. These make a fun accent to an opaque pair of tights or leggings worn under a miniskirt, especially with a pair of plain black or brown pumps. If you buy them loose enough, they might even fit over a slim pant. Be sure to stock up on a few different styles – polka-dot, stripe, you name it – because they’re very inexpensive. Find a variety of choices at Macy’s for around 10 dollars a pair.

The Scarf

It’s been a classic favorite for years, but finally scarves have evolved from being bulky and awkward to, well, chunky and fashionable! Great for tossing over your shoulder at opportune moments of drama. Thick, knit scarves are available at H&M for about 9 dollars each. Also, check out more bandana-like plaid scarves that are tied around the neck for a style that’s more street, and better over hoodies or graphic tees.

The Hat

Why should Parisians have all the fun? Don yourself in a knit beret this winter for a look that’s totally chic, with just a hint of snob. Stick to ivories, off-whites, and grays, or else this accessory will overpower the rest of your look. The hat pictured is also from H&M for around 10 dollars, and it makes for great accessory-matching. Oh, and please wear your hair down or in a messy bun underneath it? The last thing you need is glaringly-obvious hat hair.
