At-a-glance

Recently, Anatomy students had the ultimate hands on experience: touching and feeling parts of the human body. On Thursday Feb. 8, Anatomy students went to Cloud County Community College in Concordia to learn from the cadaver labs.

After studying the systems and muscles, the cadavers provided a real life visual for MHS students.

“We study the systems and muscles but we use paper and lab books. To see the real thing is surprisingly different,” Anatomy teacher Christy Doile said.

The students agree that the experience at the cadaver lab was valuable to their education.

“It allows you the exploration of the interworkings of your body,” junior Hunter Hess said. “The real life application is interesting.”

While discovering the parts of a human body, students encountered challenges greater than anatomy.

“It bothered me that they were people and had families,” Hess said. “Some had fingernails and toenails.”

Other students enjoyed exploring the dark recesses of the body.

“We could touch and look. We could feel,” junior Shannon Nakai said. “We got to see the long intestine, the short intestine and the heart.”

After learning from the cadavers, MHS students toured the CCCC campus. The athletic trainers from CCCC spoke to the students about the athletic training program.

“They explained the rehabilitation process,” Doile said. “They had students be volunteers for electric stimulation.”

Electric stimulation works as therapy to reduce the swelling of an athlete’s muscles by stimulating the nerves.

Overall, the field trip offered a different perspective for MHS Anatomy students.

“It gave me a visual of what the iniside of my body looks like,” Nakai said.
