After suffering a loss to Maize on Jan. 25, the boys basketball team has bounced right back.

“We came out slow, we didn’t play as well as we could’ve,” Tim Kliewer, sr., said. “We came out flat, we only scored 58, our average is like 70. We didn’t shoot that well.”

With a record of 2-1 in the McPherson Invitational, the boys took 2nd place with a loss to Maize and an ending score of 58-59.

“We played sloppy the first half and in the second half we picked it up and played great team defense,” Aubrey Bruner, sr., said.

A foul called with .4 seconds remaining in the championship game caused controversy in the Bullpups’ first loss of the season.

“I’d say it looked like a foul but the refs couldn’t see all of it. I didn’t mean to do it, you could tell on the tape that I got pushed. I didn’t decide the game or anything, we could’ve won the game other times,” Kliewer said.

The boys traveled to Hutchinson Jan. 31 and claimed a victory against the Salt Hawks, breaking their long standing Ark Valley League winning streak. The final score was 60-45.

“We went out and played how we did our first ten games and not thinking we were going to win easy. We played McPherson basketball,” Bruner said.

The Bullpups will be heading to Ark City tonight. They will play following the girls’ game.
