English teacher Jessica Curl learned she had won the Kansas Horizon Award on Monday. The award is given for excellence in first year teaching.

“The Kansas Horizon Award program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. The mission of the mission of the Kansas Horizon Award program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding,” the Horizon award overview states.

Curl was recognized by USD 418 superintendent Randy Watson at the Board of Education meeting on Monday.

“It’s a special achievement when you have a Horizon Award winner which represents the best of the best of the people who have completed their first year of teaching,” Watson said.
