Drills, saws, hammers and nails are some items that it takes to build a house, but the carpentry class knows it also takes some heart to get the job done.

Every year the class constructs a house that has been purchased before the actual building begins.

And while building a house every year may seem mundane, Arlan Penner, carpentry, makes sure the experience is anything but boring.

“This house has more cabinetry and unique architectural features than last year’s house,” Penner said.

The house was designed by the new homeowner’s sister. According to Penner, by allowing the carpentry class to build the house, the homeowners are saving around $25,000.

Building the home has allowed the students many opportunities as well.

“I learn essential skills that I can use for the rest of my life,” Joel Norman, jr., said.

Charles Rousey, jr., has another reason for joining the class.

“My dad was in carpentry and I wanted to learn more about it,” Rousey said.

The due date for the house is rapidly approaching. They must be completely finished by the end of school, but the interior will be done by All School’s Day, just in time for an open house.

“Seeing the work finished is what I’m looking forward to the most,” John Kaegi, sr., said.

There are a few perks that come along with creating a masterpiece.

“I like hammering because it relieves stress,” Landon Wall, jr, said.
