With only two weeks remaining until state, the MHS boys basketball team is working hard for what may be their last game together as a team.

“We kind of talk about it [state]. We prepare for the teams we’ll probably face and work harder,” CJ Bruner, jr., said. “I’m just wondering which game will be our last together.”

Throughout the season, the team has faced few losses, yet some of these prove to be more disappointing than others.

“The Emporia invitational championship game [was most disappointing] because we knew we could’ve won and that we should have,” Brett Koehn, sr., said.

Despite its past hardships, right now, the team finds itself excited about the present.

“Right now we have the chance to win the AVCTL. Just knowing that we have the chance [is rewarding],” Andrew Reese, sr., said.

Not only does the team have the chance to conquer AVCTL, but they also feel they have a chance to win state.

“I’m not worried at all [about state] because we’re as good as any team,” Tucker Hawkinson, soph., said.

Gordon Peck, assistant coach, knows that the team can accomplish wins. Unlike other teams in Kansas, the McPherson boys basketball team doesn’t just hope to make it to state, they hope to bring home the championship.

“A lot of teams will have their goals to make it to state, but our goals are different in that we want to win state,” he said. “That’s what we’re always striving for.”
