Sherlock Holmes Movie Review
Advertising

Audiences discovered 2009’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’, a film based off of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic book series, on Christmas Day. The movie has already received several nods from the Golden Globes, as well as a nomination for Best Score from the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

The movie begins with Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson, rushing to stop a ritual from Black Magic practitioner Lord Blackwood. Three months later, Blackwood is executed, with Watson himself pronouncing him dead. However, before his death Blackwood prophecies his rise from the grave, along with three unpreventable deaths. When Blackwood is seen walking through a cemetery where he was buried, Holmes and Watson must rush to prevent the deaths from occurring, while attempting to outwit Holmes’ love interest, Irene Adler.

The newest version of Holmes refreshes the character from a wrinkly old prune to a sexy, sophisticated, unappreciated psycho genius who captures both the heart and eye. Watson becomes the perfect compliment, acting as more of a wife to Holmes than a partner, which is only reinforced with their seemingly constant bickering. All four main actors portray their characters wonderfully, and there is not a single instance where they break character.

However, the real magnificence of the movie pops in with a score so ingenious and overflowing with perfection it could only be composed by the master, Hans Zimmer, himself. Holmes’ violin plucking carries over into the scores, which gives every scene a lively and playful air. For a few moments, the music threatens to overshadow the general plot and acting, but the close calls remain simply as close calls.
