They finally did it. A new high school has been built in Syracuse and it’s perfect timing. With around 2500 students and a capacity of only 2000, Davis High has been in dire need of an extra school to capacitate the overflow. Many may think they are experiencing dejà vu when seeing the design of the new school, being that it was designed by the same person as Davis and looks almost exactly like it, but backwards. There is also a new elementary being built in West Kaysville, as well as in Layton.
With all these new schools, new school boundaries must be made and so a study is being done. The study will not only create the boundaries of the new school, but re-adjust the boundaries of the pre-existing schools in the surrounding areas. The schools involved along with Davis are Bountiful, Clearfield, Layton, Northridge, Viewmont, and Woods Cross. Elementary schools include: Eagle Bay, Heritage, Kaysville, Bluff Ridge, and Sand Springs.
In the boundary study process, there are several factors to be considered. The District looks at current and future growth patterns, safety of students, natural topography, continuation of neighborhood groups, and transportation. The school district has formed a high school boundary committee comprised of representatives from different high schools as well as those from PTA, the Davis Education Association, and the Davis Classified Employees Association.
Syracuse High was made possible by the Building Improvement and Construction Bond which voters approved in 2002 and it will be opening its doors in the fall of 2007. The boundary study will last through November and the boundaries will be finalized in December.
