Frisbee Golf
The whole family can enjoy a game of “disc golf” together in the warm weather. The object of the game is to throw specially made discs into a steel basket in the least amount of throws. The ranges are between 150 feet to 500 feet. The player has to throw the disc and then start the next throw wherever the disc lands. It’s a fun way to get some air outside, hang out with friends, and play a competitive sport.
The cost is not an obstacle; it’s cheap or free in most places. At Lions Park in Placerville (3633 Cedar Ravine Road), they offer a Frisbee Golf course along with horseshoe pits and tennis courts.
Fishing
This particular outdoor activity is a fun way to be together with friends and relax. It is an unhurried sport, until the fish begin to bite and then it winds to excitement. If leisure and achievement are sought out in the open air, this water hobby is recommended.
There is a pond on Durock Road in Cameron Park that is open to fishermen before and after spawning season. In addition, many places in Placerville are open for the public to dip their lines in.
Biking
The American river biking loop goes from Folsom all the way down to Sacramento. A biker can start at Beals Point near Folsom Lake and ride the paved, easy to follow path.
This 32 mile trail hugs the American River and is enveloped in a world of green and canopy of tall trees. The path passes alongside Natomas Lake and Nimbus Dam, eventually becoming parallel to Fair Oaks. There are numerous rest stops and water fountains along the way. It’s free and can evoke an extremely good workout.
Hiking
There are many hiking places in Placerville that are free and beautiful to explore. One particular trail is located on Carson Road off highway 50. The path is paved and runs through a forest of trees, behind houses, into a tunnel and over a bridge. The trail contains marked half-mile increments so the hiker can plan how far they would like to travel.
Another great place to hike can be found off of Highway 49 near Lotus, California. The Dave Moore Nature Area features a wheelchair-accessible, mile-long loop trail and circles through a variety of habitat-types.
Located near the South Fork American River, the Dave Moore Nature Area also offers opportunities for picnicking, bird watching, swimming, gold panning and white water rafting. The trail is open from 8 AM until sunset.
