CV has an incredible number of clubs representing various areas of students’ interests. Every year comes a new wave of clubs and this year brings approximately 15 new clubs on campus.
Each club holds their own unique potential ranging from saving the world to simply gathering together to chat amongst each other about their favorite books. A new club on campus known as LOOK International Development has been approved by ASB. This club represents the future development of the third-world countries and the desire for students in the United States to act accordingly for the bettermen of mankind.
LOOK focuses on a specific developing country every year and the students gather together to develop a resolution for the country. With the ideas for aiding the country, this club entirely devotes itself to raising awareness of the events going on in the selected country.
The resolution includes an analysis of the country’s issues. Questions that are debated upon by the students are: What caused this country to "develop" into the current state? What are the current powers of the world doing to aid this country? What can the selected country’s citizens and government does in order to develop itself.
"The LOOK club offers a great opportunity to learn more about the struggles in developing countries. LOOK also plans to find ways to assist those countries through disseminating information and fund-raising," club advisor Susan Smith said. LOOK already obtained an international humanitarian organization as a sponsor, Hope for Honduran Children. A total of six officer meetings have taken place during the summer vacation, each lasting at a minimum of three hours to prepare for the upcoming year. Much preparation has been invested into this club for a successful year.
This year’s focus country for LOOK is Colombia for a number of reasons. Colombia is a war-torn country that is slowly developing in South America.
Not many people observe things going on right next door to them. The officers chose Colombia because of they chose to expose Colombia, an unpopular country to the school and community. Many people know about the basic issues going on, but not many people understand.
"The new clubs this year seem to have new motivations and potential to keep themselves going and succeeding," ASB’s Director of Organizations, Irene Park said.
This statement holds especially true to LOOK. One high school club cannot change the whole world, but arming the the students with this information will aid in the future development of this workd, The purpose is to allow people to understand events going on in certain countries and arming them to act and do something about the issues.
LOOK’s plans for this year consist of hosting two major events that will raise awareness of Colombian issues and indirectly or directly support South American third-world countries. The club has requested for several guest speakers to come.
The whole year has been divided into two parts: a resolution developing part and a raising awareness part. In forming the resolutions, groups will be set and they will debate on the issues of the county and what one can do to support the selected country. To raise awareness a number of fundraisers and going into the community raising the awareness of horrors going on in Colombia will take place.
Though the idea of this club holds value and the planning of this club seems to hold precision, the true success of this club will depend on the participation of the student body and the staff. To make even a miniscule change, a miniscule effort is needed. With high goals, LOOK pushes forward in the 2009-2010 school year.
LOOK is devoted to make a difference in the future by analyzing and acting in small parts to help CV and La Crescenta understand the problems of the developing countries today.
