The Crescenta Valley Falcons have plunged into swim season. Their first meet was last Tuesday, March 2nd, against the Valencia Vikings. Although Boys’ Junior Varsity fell short of a win, Boys’ Varsity, Girls’ Varsity, and Girls’ Junior Varsity defeated the Vikings. Just two days later, the teams swept Saugus in their second meet of the season.

Although Arcadia is always their biggest rival, Hart High School has a very competitive team. In most swim seasons, the Falcons either go undefeated or lose one meet, which is against Hart.

"They have alumni, who are gold medalist swimmers, like Anthony Ervin," Coach Jan Sakonju said.

Fortunately, the Varsity and Junior Varsity boys defeated Hart, although the girls fell short.

"This is one of the most talented teams that we’ve ever had," Sakonju said. "For our relays, our team is so deep that we can make two relay teams that can beat other schools’ fastest relays."

Every day, the CV swimmers are required to work out for two hours. Their workout consists of a combination of cardiovascular training, strength training, working out in the weight room, and perfecting their techniques to improve their strokes.

Boys’ Varsity swimmer junior Ho Jean Yoon, who has competed in the Southern California Junior Olympics, said that the team’s biggest rival is Arcadia.

"But we have a lot of fast freshman and varsity swimmers, so I don’t think it will be a problem," Yoon said.

Boys Varsity swimmer freshman Young Tae Seo has definitely been leading the team. Seo has competed in the Nationals Champions Meet. A Southern California Swimming record holder in five different events in the 13-14 year old age group, Seo broke Michael Phelps’s record for the 13-14 age group in the 400 individual medley with a stunning 3 minutes and 55 seconds.

On the way to and from meets, the team sits in silence to reflect on what they could improve in the next meet.

"I like the fact that we are such a great team for an individual sport and that we are always there for each other no matter what," Yoon said. "We get the best feeling when we win."

Although these aquatic athletes look poised and calm, it is nearly impossible to feel sedated. The nervousness and stress levels are so high that they admit that they cannot hear the cheering going on around them.

"The team has a great attitude, and they are working very hard. It’s been four weeks, and it has been an excellent start to the season," Sakonju said.
