After competing in the Region tournament the boy’s and girl’s tennis teams traveled to the State tournament in Tucson at the Tucson Racket Club April 29-30.
The Green trio of Andy, Brian and Chris made their first trip to the State finals. Andy competed in the singles bracket, and his twin brothers, freshmen Brian and Chris, contended in the doubles tournament.
“I was nervous. There were so many people there watching,; every one of my strokes had to be perfect,” said junior Andy Green.
Andy faced Cactus Shadows in the opening round and got off to a slow start losing the first set 0-6. Changing his strategy, he gained a 4-2 lead in the second set, but lost sight and ended up losing 0-6, 4-6.
Brian and Chris, on the other hand, were matched up with Region rival Moon Valley; however the Rockets did not show up to the tournament, and the Greens advanced by default.
Next, they faced the No. 3 seeded Pinnacle and fought hard but struggled to secure the close games, losing 6-2, 6-1.
“I was so proud of how the boys competed at State,” said Coach (and mom) Jill
Green. “I am looking forward to having an even stronger team next season.”
The girl’s tennis team also traveled to the tournament with sophomore Anela Pehlic competing in the singles contest. This was Pehlic’s first time going to State, however she has plenty of experience playing in junior tournaments.
In the first round she faced a tough player from Ironwood Ridge. Pehlic held strong in the first set but lost it 5-7, and in the second set she lost focus and succumbed 0-6.
Coach Sheila Ringhiser said she was extremely pleased with the season’s results.
