SGA may stand for Student Government Association, but here at Clarksburg High School, it seems like it may stand for Students Getting Active, because of the numerous things that they have planned for this year.
Clarksburg's SGA has many events planned for this year, the most upcoming affair being Homecoming. One of the things that the SGA is doing different for Homecoming this year is that each class is getting a hallway to decorate, as opposed to showcases in previous years.
SGA Vice President Shrina Amin anticipates a successful Homecoming this year. "I think we can get really far with Homecoming, because that’s usually a successful event," said the senior of her expectations.
SGA President Aleisha Forde added, "We're trying to do Homecoming big this year."
Along with Homecoming, the SGA is doing other community service events, with an approaching blood drive October 14, and another in February. They are also planning an event to help the homeless, a talent show, and an undisclosed event that is sure to be grand. Forde said [about the event], "We're trying to do something big and different this year."
Along with doing new activities, the SGA is working on improving within its core. Third-year sponsor and Special Education Transition Support Teacher Melissa Overstreet said, "We're learning from our mistakes, from our victories, from things that we did well…we're going to take into account all of those different things in planning our events this year."
Within the SGA, both its leaders and members hold high potential to accomplish great things. Forde said, "I see great potential [in the SGA] because we have a more solid SGA then we've had in the years past; we have 18 core members and they're all committed and focused, and I think it’s going to be better."
Overstreet added, "I have a really good feeling about the students that we have in the SGA this year. There seems to be a lot of positive energy and we have a lot of new faces, and we also have quite a few old faces that are continuing to support us."
