Running the library is a hard job, but the distribution of textbooks showed that there is room for improvement.
Students interviewed thought that the way they were checking out books seemed disorganized. They personally thought it would have been better if we checked out books by subject. For example, on Monday math teachers could have taken their students to the library for text books followed by science teachers on Tuesday. This way students would have a better idea of what books they still needed to get.
Putting the responsibility on English teachers was also unfair when students could have checked books out on their own time. English teachers interviewed said it was fine with them because at some point they were going to need to get books and they needed their students to have books that day in class.
Students also said they did not like standing outside in the heat and that they did not like not being able to check out books if they did not have a locker. However, some students liked the idea of getting books and lockers together by grade. Some of my fellow classmates thought getting the lockers the same day as the books was a great idea because that way they would not misplace the books or damage them more than the books already were.
Students also made the situation difficult by not going prepared to the library when they knew they needed their ID cards to get a locker and books. The librarian also had trouble with students that had not turned in books from past years and students not putting their names on books and getting them confused with other student’s books.
Students need to realize that it is a hard job to get 28,000 books to each and every one of you and it is a harder job to get all the books returned back to the library. More importantly, books are expensive. The average book is $80. I don’t think any student wants to pay $80 for a book.
Here are some things we can do to help out the librarian: 1. Just go prepared and if you find a book that’s not yours please return it. Do not keep them or throw them away. 2. Students, the librarian is actually a person too and if you do your job she can do hers. All you have to do is be nice to her and her books.
