Sergio Garcia, Fairfax’s first male Prom Queen after his coronation.
Traditionally, the Prom Queen is a female elected by the  senior class, but this year’s prom was different. It was truly a night to remember as Sergio Garcia won as prom queen, making him Fairfax’s first male nominee. The crowd shouted with excitement and encouragement as Garcia was declared queen and placed to dance with Keith Perez, who was chosen as prom king. Many were disappointed, as Garcia and Perez didn’t dance together.$0Although his competitors were shocked and upset, the female nominees for prom queen were nonetheless classy as the Garcia was coronated.. Although their dreams of being prom queen were unexpectedly irrupted, the female nominees remembered that prom night was a special night full of memories, dancing, pictures, friends, and parties. $0While many of his friends and family support and congratulated Garcia on becoming prom queen, he did face a backlash of international portions.$0When Garcia decided to run for prom queen, he had no political agendas. “I think people probably thought I did this because I was “angry” about Prop 8. I had this idea before it was even mentioned,” said Garcia. $0Garcia understands how easily the media can and has twisted his story out of proportion. “I think things do get mixed up in the media,” said Garcia. At the end of the day, “The attention is nice, but sometimes I feel like I can’t breathe,” says Garcia. $0Amidst the criticism and bashing Garcia has faced, he was happy to see positive outcomes of his winning prom queen. “I heard someone say ‘First it was Obama, not it is Sergio,” said Garcia. Garcia found it touching to read an email from a mother who said that he was inspiration to her child, who was being bullied daily for being gay. $0The Los Angeles Times, among other new organizations, has reported on Garcia winning prom queen. “I am upset with the Los Angeles Unified School District and, in particular, very upset with Fairfax High School for letting his name be added to the ballot,” said Daniel Marinoff, in a letter to the editor of the Los Angeles Times. While Marinoff is a supporter of gay rights and same sex marriage. “I do believe that we have pushed the envelope too far.” $0Others sent the Los Angeles Time’s responses with encourage and praise for Garcia. “If the boy at Fairfax High School feels like one of the girls, then of course he should be allowed to run for prom queen,” said Randy Peterson. While others may disagree with Peterson and say that prom queen should be exclusively for girls, the majority of students thought differently on prom night ’09 and voted Garcia as their queen.$0
