Do you know what SADD stands for? What about GAA or NHS? Clubs are a great way to meet new people, try new activities, and explore new interests. Some clubs have already started membership drives, so act now if you’re interested!
Tri-Hi-Y
Tri-Hi-Y, a Christian oriented club, represents strong leadership skills by conducting many events such as Tot Night, Fall Conference, and Youth In Government. Hi-Y Week is a celebration of the club and its members. Members join together in activities such as Wing Night, ice skating, bowling, and other fun events. This club also does several community service projects such as Trick Or Treat for canned goods, bingo at Freedom Place, ring the bell for the Salvation Army, and many more. Dues are approximately $15. If you are interested in joining, contact Brittany Conrad, Tri-Hi-Y President, for an application.
Hi-Y
Hi-Y, a Christian oriented club, is very successful in its planned events throughout the school year. Activities include, ice skating, bowling, and wing night, are both fun and entertaining for everyone who participates. Fundraisers are also an important part of Hi-Y. Enlisting the support of the student body to help participate in raising money, the Hi-Y and Key Clubs hold an annual charity basketball game. Dues are approximately $15. If you are interested in joining, contact Joshua Lang, Hi-Y President, for an application.
Key Club
Key club is a service-oriented club that is sponsored by Kiwanas. Builders Club is the Middle School branch. We do community service at the school and in the community. Some activities that you will be doing are homecoming, radio auctions, bell ringing, Christmas angels, and sheltered workshop. The dues for joining this club are $15. If you are interested in joining this club, see sponsors Mrs. High and Mr. Samoraj or Key Club president Jason Larch.
Chem Club
The purpose of Chem Club is to promote an interest in chemistry. If you join this club, some of the activities you will be doing are elementary school visits to Weirton Heights, Broadview, and Liberty, the Faraday program at the University of Pittsburgh Carnegie Science Center, Chemistry Olympics at the University of Pittsburgh Carnegie Sports Awards and Kidz Newz. The dues are $5. If you are interested in joining this club, see Chem Club president Jennifer Zatezalo or club sponsor Mr. Karpyk.
Interact
Interact is connected to the Weirton Rotary. The main focus of this club is community service. Dues are $5. If you want to know more about this club, see sponsor Mrs. Hook.
Literary Magazine
The Literary Magazine has been around for quite some time. It includes a variety of creative writing including poems, essays, prose, artwork, photographs, and school-wide writing assessment winners of the current school year. The magazine is published once a year and then is distributed in the fall when students return. If you are interested, see sponsor Mrs. Mick.
Student Council
The Student Council is a service organization that provides guides for school activities, coordinates campus beautification, runs all elections for the school, and holds luncheons for Teacher Appreciation Week. There are no dues to join this club. If you want to know more about this club or if you want to join, see club president Alicia Boyles or sponsor Mrs. Mahoney.
Girls’ Athletic Association (GAA)
The Girls’ Athletic Association welcomes any girl, not only athletes. Some of the clubs’ activities are fundraisers and the annual formal dance in March. We also hope to plan some group trips to various sporting events throughout the year. Dues are $5. If you are interested, see club sponsor Mrs. Dulick or president Mia Caccavale.
National Honor Society (NHS)
The National Honor Society is an invitation- only organization. You will be invited to join at the end of your junior year if you have an overall GPA of 3.3 and belong to 2 clubs and/or sport teams. You will be required to complete 45 hours of community service by graduation as well. Some activities you will do are the peer (student) tutoring for Weir High students, Christmas Angels for local area children, and many other service activities. The dues are $25. Organization sponsors are Mrs. Dulick and Mr. Samoraj, and Jeff Holbrook is club president.
Chorus
All students who sign up for chorus class are in chorus club. The students perform for community and school functions – concerts, parades, etc. They also raise money for the purchase of music and travel as a group. Some annual activities include: Weirton and Steubenville Christmas parades and sending singing telegrams to students. There are no dues. If you are interested, see sponsor Mr. Seifert or president Brandon Shugart.
Foreign Language Club
The purpose of the foreign language club is to foster appreciation of different cultures and languages. We have an adopted child from Ecuador whom we support. She comes from an extremely poor family, and we provide education, clothing, and healthcare as well as Christmas gifts and birthday gifts. One of the annual activities is a pepperoni sale.
