Old enough to be your grandparents, the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, accompanied with Jason Bonham, performed live for the first time in 19 years. The concert was a success. However, it was the last time to be able to see Led Zeppelin perform live ever again.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of alternatives to the real Led Zeppelin that you can listen to. On Dec. 16, I went and saw Led Zeppelin: A Rock Symphony, performed by the Florida Symphony and a Led Zeppelin tribute band. The show was amazing, and the tickets were rather cheap, $49 for lower seating. There was a full light show and the orchestra meshed with the classic Led Zeppelin songs beautifully.

Guitarist George Cintron played Jimmy Page’s music perfectly. All the songs were played as the studio versions. Randy Jackson doubled as singer and guitarist when he pulled out an acoustic 12-string guitar and played such hits as “Stairway to Heaven,” “Thank You” and “All of Your Love.”

If you thought that no one could be as heavy on the drums as the late John Bonham, you were wrong. The drummer at this show pulled off a near rendition of John Bonham’s “Moby Dick” drum solo, even playing with his hands.

Lez Zeppelin is an all-girls tribute band that plays all the classic Led Zeppelin songs. I have personally bought and listened to their CD, which in my opinion is really good. The drummer, Helen Destroy, plays just as powerful and precise as Bonham, which helps keep the music flowing. Sarah McLellan’s powerful and high-pitched voice is the closest sounding to Led Zeppelin Robert Plant’s, even better than his own from their last live performance. Steph Paynes, the guitarist, plays all of Page’s riffs perfectly, and she can even nail the hardest solos.

Dread Zeppelin, another tribute band, is best known for their reggae style of interpretation. Their singer is an Elvis impersonator named Tortelvis. Plant has been quoted saying that Dread Zeppelin is his favorite tribute band. They produce their own music as well as cover classic Led Zeppelin songs such as “The Immigrant Song” and “The Song Remains the Same.”

All of these bands are still making music. More details about their tours and CD’s can be found at their websites, allowing you to further appreciate Led Zeppelin’s classic rock.
