Over the last couple of weeks a new announcement has been playing in the morning. This announcement is that Buffalo Select Chorus is looking for new members and to call the director, Linda Appleby for more instructions. After this announcement started playing ,I noticed some people expressed interest in joining but also apprehension and fear of rejection by a singing community. I think these people interested in joining need an insider's guide to help them understand if this is the right thing for them. Having been a member of Buffalo Select Chorus for more than four years, I think I can help anyone trying to decide whether to join.

When I joined Buffalo Select chorus in 2006, I was just as nervous as the people at da Vinci thinking of joining. After coming to a few rehearsals, I got over that fear. No one at BSC is outright mean or rude. We support each other and we are somewhat of a little family. We encourage each other to try new things and go out for solos! We don’t have any competitions or anything, we sing for the fun of singing. So anyone nervous about singing in front of people does not need to worry, we don’t bite!

Our chorus also has unique opportunities that would benefit someone wanting to go into the performing and vocal arts. One year we had three girls from our chorus African dance and they even danced for an international event broadcast live to Israel. Recently, we did a ‘jingle’ with Kenny Coffman, a producer of most of the songs in commercials on T.V. After we finished doing the jingle he even offered jobs to some of the interested members! A couple of our members are even going to audition for Juliard!

Still our chorus is made up of human beings and we aren’t always perfect. Most of our free time is spent with one another and friction sometimes occurs. We’ve had blow ups and arguments, disagreements and quarrels but we’ve never ended a rehearsal without hugs, smiles and brownies!

So if you're interested in joining a chorus that will become more like family, singing songs that will make you feel good inside, releasing a professionally recorded CD, and enjoying wonderfully made brownies, then BSC is for you! Stayed tuned to the morning announcements and I hope to see you Monday at 6:30 pm!
