Junior Campos, a junior at Venice High, is honored to be athlete of the month for varsity baseball. "I do it for my team," he added.
It is Campos' first year attending Venice High. He played baseball as a Westchester Comet his freshman and sophomore year. "I want to lead my team to an Invitational championship, like I did at Westchester," he said.
Although he is not a captain this year, Campos said that he will most likely be one his senior year.
His father introduced the sport of baseball to him at the age of five. He has been playing for 12 years and hopes to continue playing at Loyola Marymount University.
Campos does not only enjoy playing baseball, he attends Dodger games as well. He is also a Laker fan, and goes to their games as much as possible.
Even though he is not on Venice's basketball team, he dribbles a basketball on his spare time. He is thinking of going out for that team next year also.
To maintain his grades in tough classes, Campos tries to finish his homework in class and studies after practice.
Senior Danielle Mestas said, "It's exciting I guess," about being selected athlete of the month by her coach Jessica Ruiz .
Mestas was a former captain for her varsity softball team. "We don't have captains this year," she added.
She has been playing softball since she was nine.
"I've grown up with it. I'm passionate about it," she added. She is undecided about playing in college. Mestas said, "Too much commitment. I don't think I can do that."
Fortunately for her, she only has five classes, and two are softball and being a T.A. She said she likes being lazy on her spare time and plays video games. "They're fun," added Mestas laughing.
Sophomore Andrew Southers does not play on a team at Venice High. He participates in the Students Run L.A program led by Mr. Mike Smith and ran in the L.A Marathon on May 25.
It is his first year in the program and he said that running a couple miles every day after school makes him proud of his running ability. Southers added, "It's something to prove that I have the potential."
Because he does not live close to Venice High, it is difficult for Southers to keep up with homework. "But my mom is always checking up on me and asks if my homework is done. She helps me a lot," he said.
On his spare time, he likes to build things. He recently built a mini carousel for one of his classes.
