Lady Gaga on Monster Ball Tour - Allen Le

Lady Gaga, international pop superstar, made her third stop in Houston at the Toyota Center on her Monster Ball Tour Friday night (Apr. 8).

The artist, who has been declared as the most digitally downloaded artist of all time by the RIAA, made the anxious crowd wait for almost two hours from the listed show time before she finally stepped onto center stage along with her back up dancers.

The Monster Ball opened with deafening cheers and cries from the crowd as Lady Gaga started her set off posing behind an extremely large veil which displayed a super sized shadow of her figure to the audience. She opened her concert with emphasized electronic and heavy bass instrumentals which eventually lead into “Dance in the Dark,” a song off The Fame Monster, her last EP release in 2009.

After nearly five minutes of hiding behind the veil and striking different poses, the veil, otherwise known as the stage curtains, were finally lifted. An eruption of high-pitched screams and shrieks burst from the crowd which officially got the Ball rolling.

The concert consisted of elaborate and intricate stage designs that depicted four different scenes throughout the show. There was evidence of theatricality incorporated into the concert which allowed for a thin plot to develop.

The story line followed Gaga and her closest friends, played by her back up dancers, as they set out on a journey to The Monster Ball.

First, Gaga and her friends run into a road bump as her car breaks down, then she decides to take the subway and hop on the F train where she is lead to an unknown location and abandoned by her friends. She encounters the Monster and ultimately defeats it and finally arrives at The Monster Ball.

The exchange of dialogue between Gaga and her dancers as well as the stage props gave off a dark and mysterious ambiance, yet the crowd watched in amazement.

Gaga’s fashion consisted of avant-garde outfits and bold make-up. The singer had a number of different costume changes throughout the evening which consisted of latex, metallic and sheer materials.

The singer, who turned 25 last month, spent the majority of the first hour performing hits from The Fame, her debut CD from 2008, including “Just Dance,” “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich” and “LoveGame” before stopping to share an intimate moment with the Houston audience.

“Thank you so much for coming. Thank for buying a ticket to see our show. We have a lot to celebrate, we are over 200 hundred shows now of The Monster Ball, and it’s so exciting because I keep looking at - at this arena and I can feel it, that you’re ready for another album,” said Lady Gaga.

The fans at the Toyota Center could not contain their excitement as they cheered and clapped after every sentence.

“You have made me so brave little monsters, so now I just feel like I have this moral obligation now to be brave for all of you,” said Lady Gaga. “Tonight, I want you to forget all of your insecurities. I want you to reject anyone or anything that’s ever made you feel like you don’t belong or you don’t fit in, or made you feel like you’re not good enough, or pretty enough, or thin enough, or can’t sing well enough, or dance well enough, or write a song well enough, or you’ll never have a big record, or you’ll never fill an arena, or you’ll never walk a runway, or win a Grammy – you just remember that you’re a damn superstar Texas, and your were born this way!”

After her moving speech, she later performed “Telephone,” the powerful collaboration with Beyoncé and received the loudest ovation from the audience since the opening of the show.

The concert concluded with some of Gaga’s biggest hits off both her albums The Fame and The Fame Monster, including “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance.”

And just when the fans started filtering our of the arena, Lady Gaga and her back up dancers raced back up to the stage after a change of outfits for an encore performance of “Born This Way,” her latest single off her highly anticipated third studio album of the same title that is set to be released in May.

Gaga’s choreography was full of energy consisting of constant jumps, hair whips

and strong kicks. She had the audience dancing and standing on their feet the whole night. The artist, who has had a total of seven singles top the Billboard charts so far, sounded amazing live and definitely put on a show that was more than enjoyable and well worth it.
