Many shoppers look ahead each month for the Discovery Green Flea Market.

Held every third Saturday of the month, the flea market consists of many different artists that make and sell their creations. Shoppers can find many items for the home made of twigs and paint, to earrings and necklaces made of bottle caps.

Connie Stuckey is the business owner of Mother Earth. Stuckey said she makes all of her pieces from natural and repurposed items that can be used to decorate your home. Her business also provides decorations for weddings and other events.

Stuckey particularly likes to make items out of curly willow tree twigs that are mostly used for wedding decorations.

“Many times, people have to call weeks in advance so I have time to make their decorations according to their color choices,” she said. “I like making these kinds of items and selling them here. Many of the people that buy here are people that are into the whole “green” and “mother nature” type.”

Regina Parkinson also makes her own pieces to sell. She used to work at the Houston Chronicle and made her projects as a hobby, but she recently started doing it full time.

Parkinson admits that she chooses “whatever speaks to (me)” to make her pieces. Usually one decorative frame takes her about three hours to make. This was the first time she sold her pieces at Discovery Green and said she was pleased with the outcome.

“Recycled Things”

“I like meeting all the other artists here,” Parkinson said. “Everyone here is so creative and the environment is great.”

Stephanie Toro said she always goes to Discovery Green – whether it is for yoga or the water fountains.

“I come to many of the events here,” Toro said. “Today I happened to come to the flea market.”

Toro said she is will definitely come next month.

“I like how they have the flea market here,” she said. “Everything that is made and sold here uses recycled things…it goes in theme with Discovery Green.”

Christina Hernandez found out about the event online. She had never attended before, and thought that her children would enjoy the event.

“The band here today is called Runaway Son, and they’re pretty good,” Hernandez said. “I like how everything is outside…it looks beautiful.”

The flea market definitely served its purpose; many people were seen buying items for their home, looking for vintage clothing and enjoying the entertainment.
