Have you noticed the colorful and eye – catching cupcake trucks sometimes parked near them?
If you haven’t gotten the chance to check them out, you are really missing out on the best treats Houston has to offer.
Houston has a growing cupcake truck business with amazing cupcakes but there were two that stood out to me – What’s Up Cupcake and Frosted Betty.
What’s Up Cupcake is owned and operated by Laurel Keith and Millie Wallace. Wallace is a former Houston Independent School District teacher and Keith is a vice president at an ad agency.
“Talking to Keith, you can hear the passion she has for cupcakes and her love for what she does.
“Key things, one is that our ingredients are pure. We use European butter. When we tell you we’re using caramels, we’re not using some kind of premade syrup - we’re going out buying caramels and melting them down,” Keith explained. “We talk about banana pudding - we make our own. We make our own lemon curd. Chocolate gnash is our own gnash, all that, we make our own of everything.”
Don’t be surprised when you go looking for the What’s Up Cupcake truck and a giant metallic trailer of baked goodness greets you.
“When we found out the lady was selling (the trailer), we couldn’t resist, so we bought and it kind of grew from there,” Keith said.
Worker Rachel Toombs jokingly admits that “love” is a special ingredient of theirs but also realizes the trailer itself plays a large role in attracting customers.
“It’s a big, shinny, clinky shaped, automotive thing,” Toombs said with a laugh. “A retro trailer parked on the side of the street is not a common sight in Houston.”
Houstonians Keleen McNamara and Kiran Keneally both said the trailer initially intrigued them; however, both claim they keep going back because of the cupcakes.
“I like cupcakes,” said Keneally. “I heard about What’s Up Cupcake and they’re great.”
And they aren’t they only ones with positive views about What’s Up Cupcake. Andrea Soto-Innes said she, too, enjoyed her cupcake.
“They were good – sweet,” said Soto-Innes. “They were awesome. It tastes more natural than going into the mall and getting it.”
When asked what her favorite part was, Soto-Innes quickly responded, “The red velvet icing, the cream cheese icing.”
Another cupcake heaven on wheels making buzz is Frosted Betty. They also sell fresh cupcakes in their white truck each day.
Maner Abul, who visited Frosted Betty for the first time this month at the downtown farmers market, said he was pleasantly surprised.
While devouring his Frosted Betty cupcake, Abul managed to describe the taste, between mouthfuls.
“Crumbly,” Abul managed to get out. “Really creamy. Not too sweet. Just right. Ready to eat another two.”
When asked if he would tell his friends about Frosted Betty, Abul immediately answered no.
“Because I want to eat it all by myself,” he said with a laugh.
Another customer, Dunia Mudra, said she enjoyed her cupcake.
