These coaches have the winning formula
One of Mission’s finest yet most overlooked groups, the boy’s golf team deserves some recognition for its successes this year. Led by Coach Cunningham, these dynamic golfers are giving Mission something to be proud of. So far this year, they have won all their non-League matches. Cunningham says, “The varsity team is doing well overall.” Their rivals are San Clemente and Tesoro. Unfortunately, Mission’s golf team has not yet defeated either of these schools’ teams, but given time and practice, they would “dominate,” as sophomore Carson Fitch stated.

Some of the strongest golf players on the varsity team include Matt Rigg (sophomore) and Ryan Arzaga (sophomore). “They are playing very well, continuously shooting 3 to 4 over par,” said Coach Cunningham. Ryan Arzaga has been playing golf for five years and it certainly seems like his hard work is paying off. One of the advantages of playing golf is that you, “Can do your own personal best,” as Carson Fitch explained. “You don’t have to worry so much about the team.” The golf team, however, is not one bit less close as the football team. As Cunningham had described the team, “Everyone gets along very well, and it’s important for individuals to pick each other up on the course.” Golf, as the stereotype goes, is a staid and dull game that is more suitable for retired school teachers than teenage boys. Contrary to this perception, there is humor and camaraderie on the field. Carson Fitch describes one of the funnier golfing incidents throughout his high school career: “Once during a game, I hit this guy with a golf ball. He fell down and then crawled off the course.” The golf courses themselves are also one of the best parts about being on the golf team. Ryan Arzaga claimed that, “Playing the nice courses that you don’t get to play everyday,” is certainly one of better aspects of being on the team. It is no wonder that, with a capable and experienced coach like Cunningham, Mission’s golf team has excelled to such great heights. Carson Fitch likes how “He’s always there for us, and his mustache is cool.” The guys on the team certainly all respect him in one way or the other.
