The junior varsity football team kicked off their season with a win against Gaithersburg on September 8 and hoped to continue their winnings with a current record of 4-1. With various completions made by sophomore quarterback Brandon Washington, the Devils scored touchdowns and two 2-point conversions, to lead them to a 16-8 win over the Trojans.
On September 15, the team shutout the Kennedy Cavaliers, winning 46-0.
The Devil’s next came up against the Magruder Colonels and won in a tight game 8-6. In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, Washington was injured. A Magruder defender fell on his leg and broke both the fibula and tibia bones. He will be out for the rest of season.
“Everybody has to step up a little bit. The younger guys have to work harder and we will have to coach better,” coach Adam Bahr said.
The team feels that they can still come together even in the absence of their quarterback.
“We are a team. When we lose players, everyone steps up and puts the pieces back together,” sophomore Michael Robinson said.
Injured Washington is a big loss to the team, but two freshmen have emerged to compete for the spot of starting quarterback Xavier Nelson and Wesley Carter.
On September 4, the team went to Sherwood to end with their first loss of the season. The score was 35-8, with the only touchdown being scored by sophomore Emmanuel Atabong.
“We played a very good team and we made mistakes that Sherwood capitalized on,” Bahr said.
Last year, the team ended their season with a 7-2 record losing to Blake and Whitman. They look to improve on last season’s record.
“We won some last year and this year we want to win more, taking it one game at a time,” Bahr said.
The Devils will face off against the Paint Branch Panthers on October 13.
