en, a pep rally was held to increase excitement for fall sports. Many staff members contributed their efforts to organize the event and countless athletes and student performers took the field to put on a good show for their peers. All of those efforts go wasted, however. It seems nothing these days can stand up to the apathy of our student body.

It has been a never ending battle between students and staff over the activities we want held at our school. Every year during some forum or another, ideas for the year are proposed and every year, when they do not work out, we like to blame administration for crushing our hopes and dreams. They, however, are not to blame.

A few of the staff members agree with us. We do need activities here and some things to increase morale. So, they put together the above mentioned rally. This was no simple undertaking as they worked with every fall sport and many performing groups.

All we had to do to be a part of this rally was show up. No tickets were sold or passes needed. During an already shorter day than usual, nearly an hour was given to students for this event. Still, we as a student body just cannot seem to exert any level of real school pride.

Where was everyone at that rally? Supposedly everyone was in the stands, but the noise level was nonexistent. The amount of cheering and excitement from the crowd, or rather the lack of, was embarrassing. Those who were excited and showed their school pride stood out like a sore thumb amongst the rest of their classmates. Instead of joining them, most students just looked on in wonder as to why anyone might participate in what was going on in front of them. The least we could have been happy for was to get out of sixth and seventh periods.

Instead, most of us just sat there incredibly unenthused. What message are we sending the administration? We claim to want more activities and fun things during school, but when they throw us a bone and give us an hour out of a half day, we cannot even pretend to enjoy it.

Many of the teachers thought the pep rally went well, and, all things considered, it did. It would not be fair to say that the efforts of the students and staff who put it together were not satisfactory, because really they were. For the most part, it was a success. But I know better.

This student body has more school spirit than it lead on at that rally. We are and should be excited about the sports for this fall season and the entertainment we receive at their games.

With spirit week coming bringing all of the events it entales, this student body needs to step it up. No one will ever take our request for more events seriously if last Monday is an accurate display of how much we care about our school. We have more reasons to be proud than any other school and now is the time to show it. I beg you, bring the spirit back.
