Some schools are very strict when it comes to wearing shorts in the hotter months.  Luckily, at our school we can wear shorts, as long as they are of decent length.  But who decides what’s decent?  How short is too short?

Some people say that you should be able to hold a dollar bill (length wise) from the top of your knee, and your shorts should be no shorter than to where the top of the dollar comes.  But is that fair for people that have long legs?  People with longer legs are basically doomed when it comes to wearing shorts because it’s hard enough these days to find shorts that are decent, but now we have to worry about all of these tests.  For example, there is more length between their knee and the top of their leg, and all shorts look shorter on people with long legs.  A girl with shorter legs could put on a pair of shorts and they could pass the dollar bill test but another girl, with longer legs, with the exact same shorts, might not pass.

Another test that people sometimes do to test “decent” shorts length is the fingertip test.  You hang your arms down to your sides and your shorts should be no shorter than where your fingertips end.  This also may not be fair for everyone because maybe some people have longer arms than others, and if they have long legs too, they’re really stuck.

I agree that there are shorts that are too short and they shouldn’t be worn, but maybe, next time, before you judge them, look at the facts.
