Recently, I took a random poll asking students who they thought had the most school spirit and if they thought we needed more school spirit at our school.  In the poll, it was clear that there was only a few people were considered to have the most school spirit, and almost everybody said that more people should have school spirit.  If we introduce just a few small things here and there they could help produce more school spirit from students and even teachers.

In the poll, 60% of students voted for Trevor Petitte as having the most school spirit. If you attend the school sporting events, you will see this come out of him as he is always starting cheers, encouraging his fellow classmates playing in the games, and is always dressed in the school colors of red, white, and blue.  Alongside Trevor, and voted second for most school spirit is Chris Miller.

Chris was second to Trevor with 33.3% of kids asked saying that he had the most school spirit. When I asked my fellow classmates who they thought it was always between Chris and Trevor. Chris, like Trevor, can be found in the front row of sporting events helping start cheers, cheer on the team, and wearing face paint with one side of his face blue and the other side being red. The third and final nominee is Jake Troyer with 6%. He also can be found at some sporting events trying to get everybody involved and cheering.

Unfortunately, not many students were as energetic as Trevor, Chris, and Jake. All but one of the people I asked said that more people need to have more school spirit. At the games the crowd isn’t very loud and many of the players say that that makes a huge difference on how the game goes. They say that when the crowd is involved it fuels them and lights a spark. Being on the basketball team, I agree with my teammates and classmates. When the crowd is behind you cheering loudly it makes you want to play better and put on a show. All it takes is a few small things to help this happen.

One example is having a pep rally every Friday or every other Friday. Also, contests could be put on to encourage kids to cheer, because when the student section gets involved it is more likely that other fans will start to get involved and soon everybody is sheering. Or maybe more people need to step out and get others to cheer by setting the example. Whatever it is, I believe that some action should be taken to get others involved.

Trevor, Chris, and Jake have been trying all year to get other students to show more school spirit. They offered free ice cream, got Mrs. Alberts to allow spirit days, and made announcements to encourage kids to go to the games and cheer on their Pirates.  Sometimes these offers got a few people, but people still didn’t show much school spirit.  Hopefully, people will realize how much their encouragement helps out their team. Also, I would like to thank Trevor, Chris, and Jake for setting an example and wish Trevor and Chris the best of luck as they graduate this Spring.
