We lost the battle, yet won the war, or shall I say Presidency. Barack Obama is now the President Elect of the United States. With an overwhelming victory across the nation, Obama did not have such luck here in the heartland.

Senator John McCain won the popular vote not only in Stoddard County, but in the entirety of Missouri. This finally breaks the long running what political analyzers have been studying in the past months. Missouri has voted for the winning president in every election since 1904. Over one hundred years, and they finally get it wrong. It wasn’t without a great fight, however.

North Carolina and Indiana were not called for either Obama or McCain until late Wednesday and leading into Thursday. With such a close race in Missouri there was a recount, where it was finally called for McCain over the weekend. Less than seven thousand votes separated the two candidates in Missouri; they both have 49% of the votes. In a close race like this one, every vote really does count.

Obama, however, was announced as the official President Elect late Tuesday night. According to CNN, Obama hands down wins the election with 364 electoral to McCain’s 163.

The Presidency isn’t the only election that occurred on Tuesday. Jay Nixon (Dem) is now Missouri’s governor. Other new officials can be viewed on CNN.com.
