With the school year coming to a close and each of us are about to embark on our own summer journeys, let’s take a look back at the top ten things that happen this year. Please do not confuse this with David Letterman or ESPN Top 10 countdowns… this one is much better.
10) Bus got in an accident on 114
With not that many kids on and the quick thinking of a bus driver, there were no injuries and everybody went home safe.
9) Black president (OBAMA!)
It’s been a long time coming… Enough said.
8) School lunches being changed
NOBODY wanted this change. From fried to baked, from salad bar to 2 options, this year’s choices in the cafeteria made lunch not so great anymore.
7) The basketball team got past the first round of districts
We finally got out of that 6-7 year rut of not getting past the first round. Even though we went down to eventual state champions Scott County Central, we went out with a fight.
6) Mr. Qualls almost getting ejected from baseball game
It was a sight to be seen when our own and beloved English teacher, Michael Qualls, yelled at the umpire for a bad call which almost resulted in an ejection.
5) The departure of coach Casey Knight
Some loved him, some hated him. Either way, he propelled the school spirit back into where it used to be about basketball. Good luck next year coach.
4) Ice storm
Through weeks of no power of any kind, we all pulled through these harsh to conditions while playing Parcheesi, Monopoly, and some of that good old Cranium.
3) A SEMO boy (Tyler Hansbrough) defeats the odds and wins an NCAA championship
Who would’ve thought that a country boy can slay giants and break records at the prestigious University of North Carolina? We all didn’t at first, but who got the last laugh?
2) Mr. Gisi still hasn’t retired
Still yelling. Still grading. Still playing golf. Mr. Gisi is still here and we still never want him to leave. Without Gisi, some of us wouldn’t be where we are today.
1) Cameras
The eyes in the sky have been a good and bad addition to the school. With the students feeling like they’re protected, they also feel like they’re being watched all the time. So probably it wasn’t a good investment. Got the receipts?
