Everybody seems to be talking about what will happen after the apocalypse. "The Book Eli" is the boiling point of a science fiction concept. “The Book of Eli” was written by first time screen writer, Gary Whitta. Some people are going to be more surprised and impressed with the film's big reveal than others, but anyone with a love of action and a post-apocalyptic context will find something to make Eli a worthwhile watch. Denzel Washington is slightly under-estimated. He brings intensity into his demeanor and that makes him an intriguing character and the film does a good job of making his character more central than anything else
A road warrior of a different sort, Washington stars as a protagonist and spends much of the story traveling westward by foot across an eerie landscape. A long and quick knife at the ready and with a canteen, a large machete, a couple guns and a special leather-bound book; he's a good but dangerous man who's not afraid to kill. As he sits by as a couple gets attacked, it's abundantly clear that this is a world where compassion is secondary to survival and self-interest. He lives on an Earth that was fried by the sun 30 years before. A war had ripped a hole through the ozone layer, allowing for the sun to cause massive destruction on the defenseless earth. Eli is focused on keeping his book safe no matter what so he can deliver it somewhere out West. When Eli pauses, the sky opens above him like a sheltering hand. With his green jacket and unsmiling mouth, he looks like a veteran of an unknown war, a soldier of misfortune.
After hunting the cat, a little human mayhem and a lot of atmospheric preambles, Eli wanders into a deadwood town and the story kicks into gear; for better if sometimes for worse. He doesn't try too hard to hide just what exactly the book is. In the plot Eli wants to protect it and take it west and he has a run in with Carnegie (Gary Oldman). Along the way, anyone who threatens to lay a hand on Eli gets shot. In the two or three fight scenes where he takes down numerous guys at once, you can't help but wonder why, after he kills the first few guys, the others don't run away, especially considering people are otherwise only caring about themselves living in a wasteland. The Carnegie, the leader of the outpost, fortified by his thugs, including some bulging muscle called Redridge (Ray Stevenson) Carnegie keeps the peace, dealing with the scarce supplies to the inhabitants. Among the few faces that stand out are a Mr. Fixit (Tom Waits) Carnegie’s lover, Claudia (Jennifer Beals) and her daughter, Solara (Mila Kunis)
The movie is simply another expression of good versus evil. Washington represents goodness and blind faith, literally; the old man represents Satan parading as corporate greed this time. The girl, who is sent to tempt goodness and faith, ends up symbolizing hope. There are lots of clues that the book has an important message that if mankind had lived by it, the end of the world could have been avoided. I recommend you see “The Book of Eli” and I guarantee that you will enjoy it.
