For what has been seven seasons now, the quirky detective known simply as Monk has solved crimes on the USA Network through a combination of skill and his OCD. Of course, for the first one, two and maybe even four seasons, the premise itself seemed fresh, but stretching into its seventh, and not at all finale season, the basis for Monk has crumbled under its own weight. Repeated plot premises and set ups remind the watched of episodes from across the show’s seven-year existence.
Watching even a few episodes seems to reveal the basic idea for the show: "Man with obsessive compulsive disorder gets into dirty situation and wacky things ensue", it seems as if the USA network has a plot generator in their headquarters which throws together different dirty things and celebrity guest starts for Monk to encounter and call it an episode. The lack of creativity is apparent when compared to other power house shows on the very same network. Watching an episode of Burn Notice leaves the viewer with a fresh taste in their mouth, something that Monk has failed to do for the past few seasons.
The idea of a quirky detective with obsessive compulsive disorder may have seemed exciting two years ago, but after so many years, so many over the top crime scenes, and most importantly after so many guest stars, the series has grown old and its wrinkles and crow’s nests becoming more and more apparent. Although it may have seemed exciting at first, the one trick dog known as Monk is on its seventh year now and it deserves a break, not for the actor’s sake, but for the sake of the poor viewers who end up watching them.
