How far would you go to save a person you loved, even if it meant ultimately hurting them, and possibly losing everything? This is the question Charlotte O’Keefe is faced with while trying to care for her daughter, Willow, who has Osteo Imperfecta. Commonly known as OI, is a brittle bone disease where bones break without a specific cause.Normally, these children don’t live very long, and in their lives will have hundreds of breaks and surgeries. Of course, Charlotte O’Keefe and her husband, Sean, take the challenge of raising a severely disabled child into their everyday lives, and all of the extra work, the wheelchairs, the breaks and hospital visits all become routine. As she struggles and make sacrifices to accommodate their fragile daughter, Charlotte thinks that there must be a better way to get by and make ends meet. After all, though it is a rare disease, there are others that have these same struggles, and somehow get by.

Charlotte makes a decision that risks ruining her marriage, her friendship, poor Willow’s outlook on life, as well as her other daughter Amelia. She decides to sue her OB/GYN for wrongful birth so that she can get Willow the supplies she needs for a normal life. However, this means standing up in court, in front of Willow, her husband, and a whole room full of people, and saying that if she had known about her daughter’s OI earlier in the pregnancy, that she would have aborted the now growing, happy, intelligent little girl whose only flaw is her frequent breaks. But this is just the start of the emotional roller-coaster of a family drama contained in Picoult’s sixteenth novel, as she touches on teens with eating disorders and emotionals, first loves and love that needs mending, families coming together and families being torn apart. As usual, she takes on both the court setting and the home environment showing the difficulties of families and basic human nature as Charlotte goes on her instinct to fight for her daughter, despite all the problems that result.

Picoult’s 16th novel, Handle With Care was released on March 3rd, and has been flying off the bookshelves She has yet again pleased her fans with another heartwarming story that her readers are sure to love. Though some disagree and say that Picoult disappointed with a not-so-sweet ending and the nature of her stories, strung through almost all of her novels, this is hardly different from her other books, and is sure to be a success.
