Cultural diversity is the variety of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole. The many separate societies that emerged around the globe differed noticeably from one another.  These differences still persist to this day.  Besides the more obvious differences that exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, there are also significant variations in the way societies organize themselves.  Differences can be found in their shared conception of morality and in the ways they interact with their environment.  However, just because someone may dress differently or believe something different, does not make them a bad person.  Being different makes us who we are.  “Every piece of  the puzzle unites us all” says Jess Saravia (’10) of Mox’s Peer Leadership.

At the Lindenhurst High School we celebrate cultural diversity in the month of February.  During the first week of cultural diversity Mox’s Peer Leaders can be found in the rotunda all nine periods of the day encouraging students to write their names and nationalities on a puzzle.  The puzzle pieces represent our differences, yet unite us all through diversity. There are many different nationalities that represent Lindenhurst High School.  They include: Nigerian, Colombian, Dominican, Italian, German, Polish, Irish, and many more.

The second week students from Mox’s PL make food dishes of Spanish, German, Italian, and Irish origins.  Some of the cultural foods include samosas, satay, chum chum, matza ball soup, rice, beans, and much more. Each day of the week is a different nationality. The week after February break is cultural dancing.  Monday is modern dancing and Irish step dancing, Tuesday is Indian and Middle Eastern, Wednesday is belly dancing, Thursday is hip-hop and step, and finally Friday is a blend of merengue, bachata, and salsa.  Before each dance the dancer(s) would talk about the culture and history of the type of dance being performed.  They would explain its significance and later answer any questions of the students in the crowd. Finally, members of the audience were given the opportunity to go on stage and learn the dances.  Cultural diversity at Lindenhurst Senior High was a big success!
