Lake County Superintendent of Schools Amy Floyd announced Tuesday that Bert Snow, an assistant football coach at Dyersburg High School, has been hired as the head football coach.
Snow, 31, succeeds Al Pelegrino, who left on April 1 to take the head football coaching position at Ripley High School.
Snow was one of three finalists interviewed by a school committee of Floyd, principals Debra Holliman and Suzanne Keefe, Athletic Director Eddie Cain, Attendance Supervisor and Girls’ Basketball coach Bret Johnson and Transportation Supervisor Howard Todd.
“We believe he is a good choice, and we are excited to have him on board,” said Floyd.
Assistant coaches must still be hired. Assistant coaches Mike Huwe and Mitch Simms followed Pelligrino to Ripley.
Floyd said the hiring of Snow was finalized Tuesday morning.
“We have to have him here now to conduct some form of spring practice,” she added.
Snow is a graduate of Henry County High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from UT Martin.
He spent one year at Dyersburg High School as an assistant under Coach Jim Counce before being hired at Lake County. At Dyersburg, he was varsity special teams coordinator and wide receivers’ coach. He was also track coach at Dyersburg High School.
Prior to coming to Dyersburg, he was an assistant for four years at McKenzie High School when the Rebels played Lake County and developed something of a rivalry.
Snow was on the sidelines at McKenzie when the Rebels defeated the Falcons 56-55 in the highest scoring game in the state that year.
At McKenzie, he held a variety of assistant coaching positions including special teams, running backs, defensive ends and head junior varsity coach.
He is certified to teach history and math.
He and his wife have three children under the age of four.
Lake County went 8-5 last year, advancing to the state quarterfinals with a seven game winning streak that captured the attention of West Tennessee.
They lost the quarterfinal game to McKenzie on a frosty night at Tiptonville 53-0.
The Falcons lost two all state players in do-it-all quarterback Carlos Young and wideout Dominic “Kruger” Kimble, but have several starters back including the leading defender Chris Rogers, quarterback Sam Hays, running back Ricky Boyd and receiver Patrick Robertson.
Lake County Middle School has the best group of players returning in nearly a decade.
