A new club on campus that goes by the name of Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science (GEMS) hopes to, in a way, prove that beauty and brains are not exclusive. AP Statistics teacher Mr. Daniel Martinez and a few students came up with an idea for a club that would change the stereotype that engineering, mathematics, and science are just for men.
"People believe that it’s a ‘boys’ world, so this club is reaching out to all the ladies here to expand their knowledge of engineering, mathematics, and science, and to let them know that they can do it too," said Mr. Daniel Martinez.
In order to join the GEMS club, students do not have to be enrolled in advanced math or science classes; anyone with the desire to learn and who likes to have fun with anything in the engineering field, mathematics and science is welcome. Mr. Martinez plans on bringing professionals from engineering and math, so the club can learn first hand about these specific fields. "We’ll have many people joining including Microsoft professors and business owners, to expose these girls to technical fields that they are not familiar with. They’ll also take field trips to different places to meet new people in new areas that can expand their knowledge," said Mr. Martinez.
A variety of subjects will be investigated, not just regular old chemistry, algebra, or geometry. "It’s going to be a combination of subjects. This will help us build projects like a dome, in which every aspect of science and math will be needed. Everyone is welcome to bring their ideas and their creativity," stated Mr. Martinez
It was primarily the idea that it is a club whose mission was to promote the idea that "girls can do it too" that attracted many of the club members.
"I spoke to Mr. Martinez about the idea and thought it was a great idea. I decided to become a part of the club because it gives girls opportunities to meet new people, especially people in important technical careers and to see how they work ,"said junior Katie Paradise.
Along with many administrators at University High School, assistant principal Mrs. Kimberly Mathis also thought it was a good idea for a new club to expose the ladies to a field that they are not familiar with.
"I thought it was a fabulous idea, getting the ladies involved. I believe that being exposed to these areas would increase their interest in the future. I also hope that girls that are involved will also learn professionalism, collegiality, and the understanding of the potential for success that young women in different careers can have", said Assistant Principal Mrs. Kimberly Mathis.
