As I was being seated by an usher, my anticipation for Brigadoon to begin steadily rose.
The lights dimmed and the orchestra pit started to tune their instruments. A sheer quiet settled over the auditorium as the orchestra pit began their introduction song.
Two travelers, Tom Albright and Jeff Douglass played by Cole Groot and senior Rick Roberts walked out onto stage, lost in a forest in Scotland.
Brigadoon was featured on March 27-29 at 7 pm and March 30 at 3 pm in the high school auditorium.
Brigadoon is a musical that is set in the present day and follows two hunters who become lost in Scotland
and encounter a small village, unknown to outsiders. The village is magical in the sense that when the village sleeps a hundred years pass.
According to Musical Director/Conductor Mr. Jason Zerban, auditions were held back in December and the cast was announced in January. Rehearsals started shortly after and the cast began rehearsing four nights a week and built up to rehearsing every night.
“The best part of the play is when it all comes together, all of the pieces, and you realize you have the ability to have a good show.” Mr. Zerban said.
Brigadoon featured students from the community and from the high school. For auditions, people had to read from a prepared monologue and sing a song to be checked for ranges. Then the actors were cast based on their speaking ability and their singing range.
“The experience on stage is a lot different than being in the seats,” senior Rick Roberts said. “But, I believe it’s entertaining to be on stage than watching.”
