U.S. Open. French Open. Wimbledon. MVHS Tennis. No matter how you serve it, tennis takes skill.
“To be a great tennis player you must combine athleticism, mental toughness, heart, and the eye of the tiger,” head Coach Dane Roy said. This year will be Mountain View’s fourth season of tennis, and hopefully their best. They won second in state last year with plans to win the title this year.
Tennis involves precise hand eye coordination with agile movements. And the one thing that makes tennis so much more challenging is the fact that the boys’ and girls’ teams are combined into one.
“This season is going amazing. We’re undefeated, and it’s going to stay that way, back to back state champ for sure, and Roy is the best,” junior Brittiny Moore varsity player and girls state champ said.
Unlike other sports out there tennis is a very point to point sport, there are no time-outs, no huddles, and players have to fend for themselves most of the times. And another interesting thing about tennis is that it really is a lifetime sport for all ages. “My 80 year old grandma still plays tennis,” senior Paul Reader said.
Tennis is a mentally tough sport and it’s not to be underestimated.
“Tennis makes you a lot more disciplined and humble,” says junior, Eric Schuler varsity player, “And it also throws in a nice tan.”
