It’s time for a change in America: Hear me NOW

As the days before the election become fewer in number, Americans must make the final decision as to whom they will vote for as the next President of the United States of America.

Since I will be able to vote in this year’s election, I plan to cast my vote for Democratic candidate John Kerry for the next commander-in-chief. But my vote for John Kerry isn’t based purely on political party affiliation. Instead, it’s based on his platform, past experience, and running mate.

John Kerry’s platform is based around the values that symbolize the core of America—faith, family, strength, leadership, responsibility and opportunity for all. He plans to work with Congress to organize a national healthcare program, improve public education, protect our natural environment and strengthen our economy.

Additionally, Kerry plans to work with our allies to solve the Iraqi quagmire, Sudan’s civil war, and the War on Terrorism.

But the most important part of John Kerry’s platform is that he won’t alienate any Americans by attempting to restrict or eliminate their rights as Americans. While the incumbent and Republican candidate George W. Bush alienates women, minorities, homosexuals, atheists and numerous other groups through his harsh positions and policies, Kerry accepts everyone. Even Republicans.

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, he has learned that America needs a responsible leader who is going to lead America through this time of war with both America’s and Iraq’s needs in mind, not just personal gain.

Edwards is also the perfect choice for Vice-President. Edwards isn’t afraid to take on corporate giants and is going to look out for the needs of rural America, something that should please every South Dakotan. He will return honor to the office of Vice-President, an office Dick Cheney has brought only scandal and dishonor to.

Kerry has been criticized as being a “flip flopper” on issues—most importantly the Iraqi War. But this isn’t of quality that we should be criticizing him about. Rather, we should be praising him for it. This shows America the he doesn’t just follow a straight and narrow path, but is willing to learn and except new ideas so he is able to make the best decisions for America.

I believe it is time to elect someone who is going to look out for the American people and work with our allies so the world can become a safer place. That person is not our incumbent president, George W. Bush, or any other candidate. That person is the Democratic candidate, Sen. John Kerry.

Senior Brian P. Mann believes Kerry is right for America.
