Families who traditionally watch the Thanksgiving Parade in the comfort of their pajamas while stuffing the turkey, may spot an LHS senior trumpet player. Russell Regulinski, was chosen to participate in the Great American Marching Band Parade, also known as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.
Only 185 high school students throughout the country are selected to perform at the parade held in NYC and broadcasted throughout the country on November 25, 2010. Students have to submit either a video or audio recording in September that follows the guidelines for which instrument they play.
Students selected travel to New York the Saturday before the parade. The days before are spent rehearsing to be certain that each student has the routine for the parade memorized and perfected.
Russell has been playing the trumpet since 4th grade. “My favorite part of band is being able to be with my friends,” said Russell.
“I am most looking forward to all the sight seeing and being part of something greater than me. Also making new friends and having fun, of course,” said Russell.
Dana Hauprich, a 2010 graduate performed in the 2009 parade with the color guard. She was one of two selected from Linganore High School that year. “My favorite part of the experience was having the opportunity to meet people from across the country,” said Dana.
Dana competed in color guard throughout her high school years and loved every minute of it. The adrenaline during competitions was just one thing she enjoyed. “I have never experienced such a strong bond within a group of people than that of the Linganore color guard,” said Dana.
Dana was first introduced to the idea through Mr. Kevin Lloyd, the LHS band director. “I wouldn’t have gone without his [Mr. Lloyd’s] support,” she said. She was excited to be able to have such an opportunity to meet new people and make friends. “In fact, I still talk to a couple of the friends I made at Macy’s on a regular basis.”
Jeffrey Shiderly was also chosen in 2009 based on his audition for the mellophone. He began playing when he joined the LHS marching band in 9th grade.
“My favorite part of the trip was meeting all of the new people from all over the country,” said Jeffrey.
The cost of the trip is over $1,000 and to help alleviate costs students often hold fundraisers or find sponsors. “I sent out letters asking friends and family to help support me financially. Mr. Lloyd also helped a great amount by sending out letters to parents of kids in the band informing them of my acceptance into Macy's and asking for any donations,” said Dana.
Russell also found sponsors for the trip. He raised money for his trip by hosting fundraisers such as at Olde Town restaurant in Mt. Airy. The fundraiser will be held on Sunday November 14th.
Russell's parents plan on attending the parade, traveling up the day before.
