How do you get 14 journalism students from Tate’s Newspaper and T.V. Production, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Reeves, and Mrs. Harper to cram into 3 minivans for an eight hour road trip? Simple. Bribe them with a trip to Busch Gardens and tell them to get a clue!

The University of Florida holds an annual journalism convention in Tampa Bay, FL, open to Florida high school students participating in media productions such as newspaper, broadcast, and yearbook April 17-April 19. The convention is a three day event which is filled with keynote speakers, entertainment, contests, socializing, and sessions which are offered to educate students in their area of interest. This year’s theme was ‘Get a Clue about Journalism’. The convention raised a record amount of $60,000 and had over 1,000 attendants.

The long drive was well worth it when students arrived at Busch Gardens Many enjoyed their time on the roller coasters and rides, especially Sheikra. “I loved Sheikra! I did not really want to get on it, but I am so happy the girls talked me into it, and the front row at that. It was a blast,” said senior Heather Magee. Sheikra, having a name which evokes the speed and power of an African hawk, is one of Busch Gardens’ new additions to the park. Soaring an entire 200 feet into the air, with 70 mph, no floor, and a 90 degree drop, Sheikra is an adrenaline-pumping experience like no other.

The convention’s itinerary leaves no time to waste. The first night consisted of opening session with featured keynote speaker, Bobby Hawthorne, and contests. Seniors Ashton Courtney, Heather Magee, Lauren Campbell, and Junior Abby Stokes were awarded second place, in News Double Truck. Also Abby Stokes won a separate award for 1st place in Mixed Company. When students weren’t in contests, they were given the chance to attend sessions with speakers with a variety of topics. From writing, to photojournalism, to layout and design, there was something for everyone.

Another highlight of the trip was the opportunity to meet Amanda Lorber editor in chief of The Circuit on MTV’s new hit TV show The Paper. The weekend came to a close with a formal dinner banquet and dance followed by the awards ceremony the next day.

Tradition editor in chief, Ashton Courtney said, “FSPA was so much fun this year. I learned a lot from the guest speakers, and I think our staff got closer. I was so excited to win the competitions, and for Liz to get state representative for next year. I could not have been happier with this year’s FSPA.”
