When the sounds of cash registers are ringing in your ears this summer, be sure to check out some of the Bay Area’s finest shopping.
Beyond the popular Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, the area boasts an abundance of other shopping opportunities.
“I think the best mall in the Bay Area is the Great Mall,” said junior Dev Tejwani. “It’s easy to spend all day there.”
The Great Mall in Milpitas offers several top-name outlet stores, including OFF Saks 5th Avenue and Guess.
Other students prefer the Westfield Mall chain, which has its main locations in San Francisco and San Jose.
“The most underrated store I know of there (Westfield Mall) is probably Zara,” said senior Samantha Del Rosario. “They have nice, unique yet trendy clothes for both women and men.”
Some prefer to venture outside the comfort of familiar malls. The streets of San Francisco and Berkeley are visited by urban hipster teens searching for good deals.
“I like American Apparel in Berkeley,” said senior Morgan Steinmetz. “It’s all really simple stuff that you can layer things over.”
H&M and Urban Outfitters are also popular favorites with both sexes, fairly affordable and easily accessible within several Bay Area locations.
“Every time I go (to Urban Outfitters) they have a new set of clothes to buy,” said junior Alexis Terrill.
Others enjoy visiting more obscure stores in the city.
“My favorite store is probably TRUE, in Walnut Creek and San Francisco,” said Dev. “It has cool urban styles that a lot of places don’t carry.”
But some of these stores can get pricey, including Bow and Arrow Shoe Boutique in Berkeley.
“It’s (Bow and Arrow) my favorite specialty store because they have an amazing collection of sneakers, although it’s very expensive,” said Samantha.
For the more brand name-conscious, the Bay Area has no lack of high-end stores to visit.
Santana Row in San Jose houses a downtown-feeling cluster of streets lined by stores such as Ferragamo, Gucci and Burberry. For those who like the feel but lack the cash, Santana Row also has cheaper stores like Anthropologie.
Palo Alto is home to the sprawling, scenic, outdoor Stanford Shopping Center, which includes various high-end stores.
Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza is also an upscale location that is home to department stores such as Nordstrom and Crate and Barrel, as well as stores such as Tiffany & Co. and Movado.
“Downtown San Francisco has a bunch of awesome designer branches, like the amazing Marc Jacobs store,” said junior Lauren Pearce. “And downtown Walnut Creek has a lot of smaller high-end boutiques.”
Some students prefer to save their cash and dig for goods in more unique locations.
“There’s a flea market in Alameda that I just went to that has tons of cool accessories,” said Lauren. “Plus, I’m an old t-shirt junkie, so Mars and Sharks in Berkeley are really good places for vintage T’s and dresses or boots or scarves.”
Berkeley is home to several other popular vintage stores, but some students avoid long treks to the inner cities and go no further than their hometown.
“I love going to Dublin Goodwill and Plato’s Closet for thrifting close by,” said Samantha. “If you dig enough you can find some treasures.”
So, whether you’re burning cash in posh boutiques or scavenging through thrift stores, the Bay Area provides a variety of affordable and accessible shopping.
