The women’s lacrosse team has started the season by dominating the competition.

The women are 6-0 overall, 2-0 in league, and are looking to earn an EBAL title this year after placing second last season.

“We’re hoping to improve on last year’s record,” said senior Rachael Martinez.

Cal will also be looking to get revenge against Amador Valley, which knocked Cal out of the NCS playoffs in last year’s semifinals.

The Grizzlies’ latest win, a 13-4 victory, came against Sotwe, England on March 30.

The women also had a 12-8 victory, which was against Foothill on March 27.

Cal opened league play on March 23 by beating Monte Vista 12-10. The victory proved that the ladies would be able to compete with the league’s top teams this season.

Senior Ashley Algieri led the Grizzlies against Monte Vista with nine goals and one assist. Rachael, junior Stefani Kawabata and senior Jacyln Goldsmith also scored a goal each.

“If we want to play with teams like Monte Vista, San Ramon, and Amador, we have to play like a team,” said Ashley. “We have to play like a well oiled machine.”

Although Cal lost several key players last year, the ladies believe they can still be the team to beat.

“We have a lot of senior leadership this year,” said junior defensive captain Hannah Monday.

A lot of the leadership will come from Rachael and Ashley, both seniors who earned all-league honors last year.

Cal faced off against Berkeley on March 6 and won 12-5, receiving strong performances from Rachael, Ashley, and goalie Susan Gieg.

The Grizzlies also had strong performances against Acalanes and Clayton Valley, beating them 15-4, and 18-1, respectively.

Cal hosted San Ramon Valley on Tuesday. Results were not available before The Californian went to press. The Grizzlies travel to Amador Valley on Friday.
