The men’s lacrosse team has been on a non-stop scoring streak and is off to a decent start this season.
Cal is 7-7-1, 2-6-0 EBAL, so far. With wins against Northgate, Alhambra, Oak Ridge, Clayton Valley, Livermore, Granada and Bella Vista. The Grizzlies have struggled to continue these successes over other EBAL teams.
Junior James Torrey has been pushing the other team out of the way and scoring plenty in those seven wins alone.
Cal has been blowing out their opponents in the wins a combined 66-44. As an attacker, James leads the team and EBAL with 44 points in combined goals and assists.
“Every game, I’ve just been feeling good and I’ve been using that on the field,” said James.
All of Cal’s players have been stepping up and playing to their fullest potential. Coach John Britton is very proud of his players.
“Everyone has been playing well, whether it’s offense, defense, etcetera,” said coach Britton.
Cal is in fifth place out of eight teams in EBAL, behind 2008 NCS champs San Ramon Valley and runner-up De La Salle, respectively. Amador Valley handed the Grizzlies two of their seven league losses this season.
“It was rough,” said Britton. “We wanted to win, blow them out actually, but it didn’t happen.”
The Grizzlies suffered a tough 9-2 loss to second placed Amador on April 10.
Cal suffered yet another loss to last year’s NCS runner up and this years EBAL’s current leader De La Salle on 17-8 on April 7.
Cal crushed Granada on April 3, defeating them 18-6 for their second win in EBAL.
“This was a good win because it gave us confidence,” said junior midfielder Scott Herrington.
The Grizzlies received their first win in EBAL this year on March 31 against Livermore. Thanks to James’ outstanding leadership on the field, Cal defeated the Cowboys 13-5 at the end of the buzzer.
On March 20, Cal played Foothill, which tied the game at 11-11 in the final minute when a penalty occurred.
Britton ended up throwing the penalty flag back at the referees and was ejected from the game. As a result, he also was suspended for the next two games, including a 12-11 loss to Foothill.
The Grizzlies also lost to Monte Vista, 14-6, on March 25 without Britton. Once again, James led the way in scoring with two more goals to add to his amazing scoring ability.
“We just weren’t prepared,” said James. “With coach being gone, it just was a weird game.”
