The boys’ locker room and commons were burglarized early April 30, resulting in the theft of $700 and additional property damage, police said.
The burglary occurred between midnight and 2:30 a.m., said campus resource officer Rob Ransom. He believes that the suspects broke into the boys’ locker room first, possibly through an unlocked window.
Once inside, the thieves located the locker room’s bolt cutter, which was used to cut off the locks of various lockers. Nothing was stolen from the opened lockers, Principal Mark Corti said.
The thieves then traveled to the weight room, where a boombox owned by Cal PE department was stolen, Corti said.
Police assume the burglars then headed to the commons after leaving the weight room.
To enter the commons, police believe the thieves used the bolt cutter stolen from the locker room to break one of the commons’ windows facing the quad and science building, Corti said.
After entering, the thieves located and stole the commons’ locked money, totaling $700. Police believe the suspects used the same bolt cutter to break the lock and steal the money.
Ransom could not confirm where the money was located in the commons.
The police were first notified of the break-in at 2:30 a.m., after an alarm in the commons was activated. The burglars were gone by the time police arrived.
Police don’t know exactly how many people were involved in the theft or how long they were on campus. If caught and convicted, the thieves could be charged with burglary, a felony.
“We don’t know if the suspects are Cal High students,” said Ransom. “But only someone significantly familiar with the school’s campus would be able to pull something off like this.”
Ransom said the police gathered fingerprints and a shoe print from the scene, which should be ready soon.
Video footage from the school’s security cameras is also being reviewed.
