ROTC Spotlight: Tereance Caines: ROTC program inspires and motivates one young man. Embed This Article

Tereance Caines proudly wears his ROTC uniform to Laney. For Tereance, ROTC is not just a class but a training ground for his future.
For this Student Spotlight, The Galleon’s very own Kaitlyn Britto interviewed Tereance Caines. Tereance is a member of ROTC, Laney High School’s student military academy program.

Kaitlyn: Why did you decide to join the ROTC?

Tereance: I have always liked the military and plan on joining.

Kaitlyn: Has the military always been part of your interest? Why or why not?

Tereance: Yes, it has. The part I like best is the planes. I have always loved planes.

Kaitlyn: What type of duties do you perform?

Tereance: I am the ASL Drill Team Commander (1st Year Cadets). NCOIC Finance is where I deal with the unit money and Rocket Club Commander.

Kaitlyn: What is your favorite aspect of being in the ROTC?

Tereance: I like doing fancy drill where you spin the weapon.

Kaitlyn: What branch of the military would you prefer to go in? Why?

Tereance: The Air Force because I have always wanted to pilot a military aircraft.

Kaitlyn: What is the most challenging part of being in the ROTC?

Tereance: First learning how to drill and then when you get to drilling with the weapon it gets harder.

Kaitlyn: How have you benefited personally from being in ROTC?

Tereance: I learn leadership from the jobs I have.

Kaitlyn: What advice would you give to anyone considering ROTC?

Tereance: If you plan on going into the military this would be good because you get a pay raise after two years in ROTC.

Kaitlyn: Do you see yourself looking forward to a military position in the future?

Tereance: Yes, as a commissioned officer.

To those seeking a challenge, ROTC can be a very rewarding program in which to participate. Members learn about teamwork and leadership, skills that will come in handy later on in life. It looks really nice on a college transcript, too. Those interested in joining can find the ROTC website at http://home.earthlink.net/~nc-802/, or contact Colonel Green for more information.
